prayer for civilization (pfc) is a collaborative experience in paint of life making life and feeding the wild.
born on july 15, 2012 in portland, oregon, pfc has continued in wax and wane ever since. paintings to date are by the red threads.
paintings are created in simultaneous collaboration (together working on the same piece at the same time in the same space) and sequential collaboration (individually working on the same piece by mailing it back and forth).
paintings are mixed media—acrylic and watercolor on raw unprimed canvas—and are created with the canvas placed on the floor/ground or on a table/bed. approximate size is 6 feet by 6 feet (72" x 72"). paintings are not stretched or framed and are presented free-flowing.
the digital images on this website represent an approximation of the original paintings. the significant reduction in size minimizes/mutes sensation and experience. the energy and detail of the works are only partially projected. that said, it is important to us to share these prayers for civilization. this website is a functional forum for such sharing. ultimately and ideally, the paintings are meant to be experienced directly.
the first cycle of pfc will consist of 64 paintings corresponding to the hexagrams of the i ching. finished paintings to date are found on the page "i ching gallery" and are presented in chronological order by start date beginning with night of the living kingdom.
